Description

A short peptide encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than the cell nucleus, making it unique among signaling peptides. It’s studied for its role in activating AMPK, a key regulator of cellular energy metabolism.

MOTS-c is a 16-residue peptide encoded in mitochondrial rather than nuclear DNA. It carries two methionine residues, which are the most oxidation-prone of the standard amino acids - worth knowing when planning how long to keep a reconstituted vial.

Also known asMitochondrial ORF of the 12S rRNA type-c
ClassSynthetic 16-residue peptide
StructureH-Met-Arg-Trp-Gln-Glu-Met-Gly-Tyr-Ile-Phe-Tyr-Pro-Arg-Lys-Leu-Arg-OH (MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR). Free-acid C-terminus; contains two methionine residues.
Molecular formulaC101H152N28O22S2
Molecular weight2174.6 g/mol (free peptide)
CAS number1627580-64-6
AppearanceWhite to off-white lyophilised powder.
Purity specification≥99% by HPLC

Every lot ships against its own certificate of analysis. Search by lot number on the certificates of analysis page, or check the paperwork before you order.

ReconstitutionBacteriostatic water or sterile water; the hydrophobic residues can make it slower to dissolve than shorter peptides.
Storage, lyophilised-20 °C, sealed and desiccated, protected from light.
Storage, reconstituted2-8 °C, protected from light. The two methionine residues are oxidation-sensitive, so keep holds short - 1-2 weeks - or freeze aliquots at -20 °C.
ShippingShipped at ambient temperature. Lyophilised material tolerates transit without a cold chain; move it to the freezer on arrival.

Working notes

  • Let a vial come to room temperature before opening it. Opening a cold vial draws in moist air, and lyophilised powder takes up water quickly.
  • Add the diluent slowly down the inside wall of the vial rather than directly onto the powder cake, and let it dissolve on its own. Shaking a peptide solution is the fastest way to denature it.
  • Wipe the stopper with alcohol before every draw, and keep solutions out of direct light.
  • Repeated freeze-thaw cycles cost you more purity than time in the fridge does. If a vial will be used over weeks, aliquot it once and freeze the aliquots.
